ICABUS – Innovative screening system for efficient filtration of sewage water
The ICABUS is an advanced sieving system specifically designed to effectively filter paper fibers, such as those found in toilet paper, from sewage water. Designed for high flow rates (up to 1000 m³ per hour), this innovative system provides a reliable, cost-effective sewage treatment solution.
With its unique design and self-cleaning operation, the ICABUS offers benefits that traditional systems cannot match.
Patented sieve angle and and large sieve holes for improved performance
The ICABUS uses a patented sieve angle of 15° (instead of the usual 70°- 80°) and larger sieve holes (1-1.5 mm), enabling the system to remove the majority of paper fibers from sewage. This unique design utilizes the length of the fibers rather than their thickness, providing efficient filtration without trapping other small waste particles.

Cake filtration
Cake filtration is the process by which the contamination or ‘cake’ on the sieve determines which particles are separated, rather than the sieve itself. Due to the particles and grease in the influent, this cake becomes thicker and more compact, increasing its resistance.
Our brushes remove contamination from the sieve. After brushing, the sieve is completely clean, and has a very low resistance at that point. This means that the water can pass very easily through the sieve there. The ICABUS contains a plate located below the brush that lies a few millimeters above the sieve plate, thus creating a laminar flow.
As this plate is part of the brush holder, it is pulled along with the brush. Under this plate, the water will have a high velocity, which causes the fibers to be stretched out along the sieve plate. As a result, a good cake layer of contamination is immediately built up under this cover plate.
Behind this plate, the water flow in the ICABUS is turbulent, but as the contamination has already formed a cake layer on the screening plate, the primary mechanism of separation will take place via cake filtration.

The advantages of the ICABUS
Blockages caused by organic substances or fat are not a problem for the ICABUS. The robust design ensures that the system continues to operate without the need for interim interventions, resulting in low operational costs and minimal maintenance.

The fine sieving system of the ICABUS is the solution.
In a wastewater treatment plant, coarse materials are first removed from the sewage water to prevent pipes and pumps from clogging. This is usually done with screens that a opening up to 6,00 millimeter have. However, these screens do not retain toilet paper pulp. For that, fine screens with openings from 0,35 to 0,50 millimeters are required.
Several wastewater treatment plants have now been equipped with fine screens, but large-scale implementation has never occurred due to the high investment and operatingcosts.
The ICABUS from Purgatoria changes this and successfully filters toilet paper from the wastewater!
Cost-effective and with relatively large sieve openings.
